Fruit and Vegetable Options

Fresh fruits and veggies are always your best friends, and that’s also true when road tripping. They’re like nature’s fast food, minus the greasy bag and questionable meat products. Here are some of my favorite picks for healthy eating on the road:

  • Apples: Crunchy, fiber-packed, and perfect for long drives. Pair with peanut or almond butter for a protein boost that’ll keep you going for miles.
  • Carrots: Easy to prep and packed with vitamins. Dip in hummus for a satisfying, nutrient-rich snack that won’t leave crumbs on your seats.
  • Berries: Nature’s candy, no prep required. Blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries offer a sweet burst of energy and antioxidants.
  • Grapes: Portable, refreshing, and easy to portion. The perfect pop-in-your-mouth snack for mindless munching on monotonous highways.
  • Celery: Crisp, hydrating, and virtually calorie free. Add peanut butter, cream cheese, or hummus for a more substantial pit stop between meals.
  • Oranges: A juicy, no-fuss fruit. Simply peel and eat for a vitamin C boost.
  • Kiwi: A tropical treat packed with vitamin C and fiber. Slice in half and scoop with a spoon for a refreshing break from the road.
  • Bananas: Nature’s energy bar with a built-in wrapper. Peel and eat, or slice and spread with peanut butter and sprinkle with granola, shredded coconut, or mini chocolate chips.
  • Cucumbers: Hydration in vegetable form, with a satisfying crunch. Slice them for a cool, refreshing snack that’ll keep you alert.
  • Sugar snap peas: Sweet, crunchy, and loaded with vitamins. Enjoy them straight from the bag for a no-fuss, nutritious nibble.
  • Sweet bell peppers: A rainbow of vitamins in bite-sized form. Pack mini peppers for a colorful, no-prep addition to your snack arsenal or slice full-size peppers to dip in hummus.
  • Cherry tomatoes: Juicy, bite-sized bursts of flavor and nutrition. Pop them like nature’s candy for a refreshing break from salty snacks.

Sage Advice: Dried mango and other dried fruits have a long shelf life, so you don’t need to worry about them spoiling during your trip.

Easy Protein Bites

High-protein snacks help prevent road trip fatigue and fast-food temptations. Here are some powerhouse options to keep you energized and satisfied on your journey:

  • Nuts: Nature’s protein powerhouses in convenient, no-prep packaging. Whether you choose peanutsalmonds, or cashews, nuts will keep you full for miles.
  • Nut butter packets: These mess-free packets of squeeze-and-eat protein pair perfectly with fruit or crackers.
  • Seeds: My favorite road trip distraction is a big bag of unshelled sunflower seeds. Cracking the shell with my mouth and depositing it into a cup while I chew the seed somehow makes the miles go by faster.
  • Trail mix: The ultimate customizable road trip snack made by mixing your favorite combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate, and candy pieces for a perfect balance of salty, sweet, and satisfying. This s’mores trail mix is one of my favorites.
  • Protein bars and balls: Compact energy bombs for when you need to refuel fast. Choose store-bought for convenience or make your own for a personal touch.
  • Jerky: This road trip snack predates the first covered wagon heading west. While bison jerky was the original flavor, this flavor-packed, no-mess protein source is available in beef, chicken, salmon, and more to please every palate.
  • String cheese: The snack that’s also a fun activity. Peel, nibble, and enjoy this convenient source of protein and calcium that both kids and adults will  appreciate.
  • Edamame: These delicious soybean pods offer a satisfying, slightly salty crunch.

Savory and Salty Snacks

While fruits and veggies and protein-packed treats are healthy options, sometimes you need a little salt to spice things up. Here are some crave-worthy options that won’t completely derail your healthy eating goals:

  • Granola: A versatile crunch factory that’s perfect for snacking or jazzing up your hotel’s sad excuse for a breakfast buffet. I make a batch of homemade granola and pack it in a mason jar for my road trips..
  • Veggie chips: Typically made with root vegetables like beets, sweet potato, and parsnip, you can feel a little bit better about this snack than downing an entire bag of regular potato chips.
  • Plantain chips: A slightly sweet, paleo-friendly alternative to traditional chips.
  • Popcorn: The lightweight champion of crunchy road trip snacks. Try air-popped, Skinny Pop, or Lesser Evil for maximum munch with minimal calories.
  • Pretzels: The reliable road trip standby that won’t leave a trail of grease on your steering wheel.
  • Roasted chickpeas: Protein-packed flavor bombs in flavors that range from honey roasted to barbeque.
  • Potato chips: Sometimes, you just need the real deal. Since I know I can easily eat an entire Costco-sized bag in one sitting, I either purchase lunchbox-sized bags or pre-portion a large bag into reusable zipper bags.
  • Tortilla chips: The ideal vessel for impromptu picnic dips. Just add salsa or guacamole for an instant fiesta at one of your stops.
  • Crackers: Crispy, salty, and so satisfying! Add sliced cheese or nut butter for a more substantial snack.
  • Cheese crisps: Want crunch with cheesy goodness already baked into each bite? Pack baked cheese crackers like Cheez-Its or crunchy cheese bites like Moon Cheese.

Sweet Treats

For those miles when your sweet tooth is screaming louder than the bossy lady inside your GPS, you’ll want a few sweet treats on hand. Here are some options that will satisfy your cravings without making your kids hyper or sending you into a sugar coma.

  • Dark chocolate-covered goodies: Nature’s perfect marriage of sweet and salty. Whether it’s nuts, raisins, or pretzels, these antioxidant-rich treats are a burst of happiness in every bite.
  • Yogurt-covered treats: These creamy-coated raisins, nuts, or pretzels are the perfect compromise between indulgence and nutrition.
  • Fruit rolls and leathers: These chewy strips are fruit masquerading as candy. They’re the perfect option when you want something sweet but prefer not to fill up on sugar.
  • Fig bars: These classic fruit-filled cookies have been around longer than Route 66. Not a fig fan? No worries! These chewy delights also come in flavors like apple cinnamon, strawberry, and cherry.

Beverages

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long drives or in hot weather. One of the best road trip hacks is to bring a water bottle that you can easily refill at gas stations or rest stops. If you’re like me and find plain water a bit boring, consider packing some flavor packets to mix things up. I like adding a bit of flavored electrolyte powder like LMNT and Liquid I.V., which come in a wide range of flavors.

Coconut water is another fantastic option, providing natural electrolytes to keep you refreshed. If you prefer a bit of fizz, carbonated water can be a refreshing alternative to soda. And of course, having some bottled water on hand is always a good idea for convenience and emergencies.

Tips for Road Trip Snacks

When packing snacks for a long road trip, choosing portable snacks that will keep you satisfied and energized during the journey is important. Here are some tips for optimal snacking in the car:

  • Choose nutrient-dense foods such as nuts, fruits, and vegetables. These types of snacks are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that can help boost your energy levels throughout the trip. Additionally, they can help keep you feeling fuller for longer so that you don’t need to stop as frequently.
  • Look for snacks that have a long shelf life. This is especially important if you’ll be traveling in hot weather or leaving on a multi-day trip. Choose items that won’t spoil easily, like granola bars, trail mix, jerky, and dried fruit.
  • Avoid sugary and high-fat treats like candy bars or chips when possible.
  • Keep cold items cold by investing in a cooler or using an insulated lunch box and ice packs. Plug-in electric coolers are best if you want to minimize ice pack use.
  • Pack your snacks in reusable containers with tight-fitting lids to keep your snacks fresh. I also pack reusable zipper bags as they are handy for organizing snacks and keeping them sealed.
  • A lightweight tablecloth is useful for impromptu picnics. I also always pack a paring knife and utensils like forks and spoons.
  • Stock plenty of napkins and wet wipes in the car. From spills and sticky fingers to unexpected messes, they can be a lifesaver on the go.
  • Lastly, a mini trash can or sealable container is great for managing waste and keeping your car tidy.
